Important Activity Group News

We may be starting a new singing group within U3A.  Rather than it being in opposition to "Singing for Pleasure" it would run alongside as a more serious group concentrating on harmony and maybe more serious music.   To call it a choir would be rather over-optimistic at this stage, but who knows?   We would just like to find if there are enough members interested to form such a group.  The venue would depend on the number of applicants.   Please contact Trevor Warland or click here and email the Webmaster - details will be passed on.

Painting for pleasure - Members please note there is no meeting on January 30th.  The next meeting is on February 13th.  at 2pm at HFWMC.  Doreen

Bowls Group - Membership of the Bowls Group is closed for the time being.  If you are interested in bowls, please let me know and I will keep a waiting list.  Chris Holden

Chess Group - We now have two spaces if anyone wants to join.  We are happy to teach beginners.  If you are interested please phone Anne or Dennis

A possible new group called Knit & Natter.  This is not a rival to the Handicraft group, it is really a purely social kind of group, whereby people will bring along whatever they are knitting and we will have a good old natter about anything whilst doing it. We may, on occasion do a group project for charity, but that will probably develop as the group grows.  I am thinking of having group meetings at my house , on the first and third Mondays in the month, either in the morning or the afternoon, depending on the interest I get. If you are interested click here and  email the Webmaster - details will be passed on.

A possible new group - Gentle keep fit, this will be arranged if there is enough interest.  I have someone to be group leader.
If you are interested click here and  email the Webmaster - details will be passed on.

A possible new group - Nordic walking.  Try a taster session at Stanwick Lakes, £5 plus £1 for hire of walking poles.   Nordic walking - the workout that tones the whole body.  Nordic walking poles add two major benefits to going for a walk, they use the upper body muscles and they propel you along, making it feel easier to work quite hard.  You burn more calories than ordinary walking, easy on knees and joints, great for neck, shoulder and back problems.  It is a sociable, safe outdoor exercise and siutable for all levels.
If you are interested click here and  email the Webmaster - details will be passed on.

New Members' Meeting - Change of Date

I have booked the Bowls Club for the New Members’ meeting on  Wednesday 29th February, 9.30 – 12.00 (inviting members from 10 – 12).   I have arranged that we will do tea/coffee etc at about 11 a.m.     I hope that many of you will be able to come.
Chris

U3A holiday organised by Northampton U3A.

It is the “Houses and History of Northumbria” from 4th September for 5 days. £379 per  person.   Blue Badge guides on three days and the trip includes Alnwick Gardens.  It is the first holiday they have organised and they would like to fill the coach with U3A members.  The closing date is 28th February with a deposit of £75.  If you would like to go, talk to Chris.

A request for people to take part in this interesting study

I am carrying out a research project for my MSc in Applied Forensic Psychology at the Universityof Leicester which examines how a mock jury perceives a particular witness.  In order to this I have developed an online survey which will ask participants questions about a simulated court case.  The survey will take approximately fifteen minutes to complete.

We would like partcipants of all ages, over the age of 18, to take part in this survey and are particularly interested in responses from U3A given the recent government consultation to increase the upper aged limit of jury members past 70.  The research has been approved by the University's Psychology Departmental Ethics Committee.

Thank you for your time and consideration
